Copenhagen is one of those cities that quietly wins you over. It’s not loud or overwhelming, but give it a day and you’ll realise just how much it has going for it. Compact, friendly and wonderfully easy to explore on foot, it’s the kind of place where you can wander without a plan and still stumble across something memorable around every corner.

The first thing that struck me was how welcoming it feels. People are polite, relaxed, and almost everyone speaks excellent English, which makes getting around effortless. There’s a calm confidence to the city — beautiful squares, striking buildings, and little details like statues or hidden courtyards seem to appear just when you’re least expecting them.

That said, Copenhagen does come with a price tag. It’s undeniably expensive, particularly in the more tourist-heavy areas. But with a bit of planning (and a willingness to wander slightly off the beaten track), you can still enjoy it without feeling like every stop is draining your wallet.

Nyhavn & the Charm of the Waterfront
You can’t visit Copenhagen without ending up in Nyhavn, and honestly, you wouldn’t want to miss it. The postcard-perfect row of colourful buildings lining the canal is every bit as pretty in real life. Boats bob gently in the water, and there’s always a buzz of people soaking it all in.

Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, it’s expensive. But it’s also one of those places where it’s worth grabbing a drink, sitting back, and indulging in a bit of people-watching. Sometimes the obvious spots are popular for a reason.

Tivoli Gardens: Not Just for Thrill Seekers

Tivoli Gardens is far more than an amusement park. Even if you’re not one for rides, it’s a beautiful place just to wander. The flower displays are incredibly detailed and almost theatrical in their presentation, and there’s something quite magical about the atmosphere, especially as the lights start to glow in the evening.

The rides add a playful energy — even if you’re just watching from a bench with a drink in hand.

The Little Mermaid (Manage Your Expectations)
The The Little Mermaid is probably Copenhagen’s most famous landmark… and also its most underwhelming. The clue is in the name — little really does mean little.

What stood out more than the statue itself was the crowd gathered around it, all trying to get that perfect photo. It’s worth seeing while you’re there, but don’t expect a grand, jaw-dropping moment.

Castles & Green Spaces
Rosenborg Castle and the surrounding King’s Garden offer a perfect change of pace. The castle itself is striking, almost storybook-like, and the gardens are ideal for a relaxed stroll or a quiet sit in the sun.

It’s one of those spots where locals and visitors blend together — always a good sign.
Where Copenhagen Really Shines: The Bars
One of the best parts of the trip was discovering places that felt genuinely local.
At Ubbe Vin, we found exactly that. It’s a small wine bar with a brilliant atmosphere, filled mostly with locals. The owner clearly knows their wines inside out, and there’s a huge selection without the intimidating vibe you sometimes get elsewhere. It’s also noticeably more affordable than the central hotspots.

What made it special, though, was how easy it was to strike up conversations. We ended up chatting with a group of locals, and it all felt completely natural — the kind of place that quietly encourages connection. On a sunny day, the outdoor seating is perfect; if not, inside is warm and cosy.

Then there’s Hviids Vinstue, a traditional pub near the main shopping area. Stepping inside feels like stepping back in time. It’s dark, atmospheric, and full of character, with that lovely sense of age you can’t fake. If you visit in colder months, their gløgg (mulled wine) is a must.
Getting There & Around
Getting from the airport into the city is refreshingly simple. Trains run frequently and get you into the centre quickly, and if your accommodation isn’t near the main station, the metro system is just as easy to use. It’s all very efficient — which, in many ways, sums up Copenhagen itself.
Final Thoughts
Copenhagen isn’t trying too hard to impress — and that’s exactly why it does. It’s clean, calm, beautiful, and easy to navigate, with just enough going on to keep things interesting without ever feeling overwhelming.

Yes, it’s pricey. But it’s also the kind of place where the experience — the atmosphere, the people, the effortless charm — makes it feel worth it.
And whether you go solo or, like me this time, with a friend, it’s a city that makes you feel completely at ease from the moment you arrive.

Thank you for sharing our Copenhagen experience. A great review of a fab weekend!
